Caen Hill Locks

On Sunday I went to Caen Hill Locks, in Wiltshire. In total there are twenty-nine locks, but the most famous ones are the sixteen that are packed in together over a short stretch. I walked up and down the main flight looking for photos, and found these.

This is the detail of the ratchets used to crank open the sluice gates.

Fifteen of the locks have side ponds to supply enough water for all the locks to work in such a short length.

I don’t think this photo was supposed to be so abstract when I took it, but I quite like the effect.
